iPhone to feature eight hours of talk, new glass surface
Apple's tooting its own horn about some new spec upgrades to its imminent iPhone. No, it's not 3G, GPS or anything crazy like that, but we'll settle for a battery life upgrade anytime, and screen durability doesn't hurt neither. Apple claims that its preliminary estimates of 5 hours of talk time, internet use and video playback were a tad conservative, and the iPhone instead will be boasting of 8 hours of chatting, 6 hours of internet and 7 hours of video. Audio playback has been boosted from 16 to 24 hours, and standby is at a welcome 250 hours. Of course, Apple does have tendency to exaggerate slightly on the battery life front, but these are promising figures, and should manage to provide a day or two's worth of solid use out of the thing. On the screen side, Apple has upgraded the original plastic surface of the phone to some "optical-quality glass" to improve scratch resistance and clarity. Check after the break for a handy battery life chart.
Update: Not sure how we missed this little snafu, but no Apple, you aren't the only one on that chart with WiFi.

Does anyone actually believe Apple's battery estimates?
brad @ Jun 18th 2007 9:36AM
you forgot to add one thing on your chart!
Iphone Battery Life: 2 years then screwed
Every other phone: replaceable battery
Why didnt they compare it to the Tytn? Or any other phone thats in a similar form factor?
joe @ Jun 18th 2007 10:52AM
So you're telling me that you read engadget mobile and you keep a phone for more than 2 years? ban this user!
Charles Ng @ Jun 18th 2007 9:41AM
The N95 has no Wifi?
Edward @ Jun 18th 2007 9:42AM
Are they idiots or are they considering their target audience to be idiots? The N95 has Wi-Fi!
xj @ Jun 18th 2007 10:45AM
Why didn't they compare it to any HTC phones like the 8525 which has a touchscreen, WiFi, and HSPDA? Hmmmm...I wonder?
carlo @ Jun 18th 2007 10:49AM
They updated to say yes, quickly.
Mark @ Jun 18th 2007 11:18AM
The Crappy Blackjack has a 2.3" screen, not 2.2"
I'll take my Treo 750 with lots of 3rd party goodness & UMTS/HSDPA anyday - and with that, who needs WiFi?
I will love to hear the sounds of iPhones shattering when people sit on them because they forgot it was in their back pocket.
Neil @ Jun 18th 2007 11:34AM
Check the link again, looks like apple got the message and updated their chart.
As far as form factor goes, the iPhone and the blackjack don't look too far off. At least in terms of the thickness and overall size. Screen size and touchscreen are another matter. I think that when you compare it to something like the tytn is close to the thickness of the treo.

From the link: With 8 hours of talk time, and 24 hours of audio playback, iPhones battery life is longer than any other Smartphone and even longer than most MP3 players"
Bullshit.
Nokia E61 = 9.5 hours talk time, 19 days standby
Sony Ericsson P910i = 13 hours talktime and nearly 17 days standby
Sony Ericsson P1 = 10 hours talktime and over 18 days standby
Just a few examples from many. And some wonder why people get sick of Apples rhetoric...
John @ Jun 18th 2007 3:41PM
Apple and Steve Jobs make me sick. The lie lie lie and lie.
N95 have WiFi!!!!!
elfguy @ Jun 18th 2007 12:30PM
Wow that is one biased chart if I ever saw one. That they managed to portrait the iPhone as better than the N95 is a feat. Let me give you a chart of my own just for fun:
Third party apps: iPhone no, N95 yes
GPS support: iPhone no, N95 yes
3G support: iPhone no, N95 yes
Removable battery: iPhone no, N95 yes
Removable memory: iPhone no, N95 yes
FM radio: iPhone no, N95 yes
Dedicated media buttons: iPhone no, N95 yes
Available unlocked: iPhone no, N95 yes
Price: iPhone $600 (with 2y contract), N95 $700 (no contract)
Shall I go on?
Michael La Framboise @ Jun 18th 2007 3:32PM
God damn! - stop with the damn whining about the f'in removable battery; when was the last damn time you even removed the battery from your phone? - Its like whining about your car not having a Lego style engine which you could quickly take out and pop a new one in. Silly silly fool.
And the dedicated media buttons - how is that even a good thing? Yay! waste some more damn space on the phone at the expense of either the phone size or the screen size, w00t!
Just my .03 cents :)
Edward @ Jun 18th 2007 4:22PM
You ever had a smartphone freeze on you?It happens, and the on/off button might not respond anymore. It would be useful to be able to remove the battery and force a reboot! It happened on quite a few Nokia of mine...You must be really patient to wait for the battery to drain before the iPhone turns off
wayde96 @ Jun 18th 2007 4:54PM
not to mention, when the phone gets wet/submerged in water by accident. had to replace quite a few REMOVABLE batteries because of this. 10 mins fix is a lot more tolerable than sending a phone in to get fixed/replaced.
Anuttam @ Jun 19th 2007 10:28AM
yea, especially when Apple is known to be really anal and expensive when it comes to replacing batteries on the iPods. I think like half their income came from replacing batteries on iPods.
JayCaesar @ Jun 18th 2007 1:10PM
thats one biased chart smh @ they dont say
GoodWill8675 @ Jun 18th 2007 2:38PM
well... i like it! haha
its basically good news with the better battery life than before
you have to look at the positives, happy faces!
Well, arent those the most popular phones its being compared to, also?
Ogre @ Jun 18th 2007 3:20PM
Man, hearing this news gave me a serious iRection...
Erik @ Jun 18th 2007 3:31PM
The key phrase here is "up to..." 8 hours.
The most important number there is the video playback/internet usage. That's how long a fully charged iPhone can keep the display turned on with a new battery. These numbers will get worse with each charge cycle. That screen is the power hog.
FWIW, I have found through experience in owning many Apple products that Apple usually overestimates battery life by about 100%.
Dev @ Jun 18th 2007 3:45PM
The Nokia N95 has wi-fi!
SuperChuck @ Jun 18th 2007 3:57PM
All Battery claims are dependent upon network configuration and many other factors; actual results may vary.
Hodags @ Jun 18th 2007 3:58PM
Well, here's a real comparison of the rest of the phones... the iPhone's specs seem to change so much Phone Scoop hasn't really taken the time to put them up but at least you can get REAL specs for the rest in one handy comparison chart :)
http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/compare.php?id%5B%5D=1065&id%5B%5D=1066&id%5B%5D=1208&id%5B%5D=1054&id%5B%5D=
xj @ Jun 18th 2007 4:36PM
The battery is an issue, when I consider spending $600++ dollars I want to be able to use the thing for more than a year (about the time my Ipod died) without having to send it to apple.
Is just the freedom to change your battery too much to ask? What's the point of not being able to do it...sounds like Apple wanting more money to me.
roe @ Jun 18th 2007 8:35PM
Are they crazy the IPhone has no comparasion to the N95! Just go to Nokia website and you will found out what I am talking about. First of all the N95 is WiFi! Common the N95 is so much superior compare to the Iphone. The nokia n95 is like the Bentley of cell phones and the IPhone is like a big old square glass. Now common, it's only 2MP with no flash compare with a superior 5MP with flash on the nokia n95. I can just go on and on and on! That chart is soooo bias! lol
derX @ Jun 18th 2007 9:29PM
This is the epitome of pitiful. First of all, comparing the iPhone to a n95 is like comparing a four function calculator to a Ti89, or like comparing an entry level American phone to an 'equipped' Japanese one.
They really went for the "nitty gritty" and their desperation is obvious. I mean seriously, c'mon "display surface:" WHO THE HELL COMPARES THAT??
I am just surprised they didn't go: Camera of 2MP resolution iPhone- Yes; N95-No.

Ironic how "iPhone" can be easily rearranged to become "Phonei" (phonetically, phoney), no?
derX @ Jun 18th 2007 9:38PM
Although I am embarrassed for them for this desperate comparison, I am totally getting this. However, because even the cheapest one isn't worth its price, I am totally waiting to buy this sucker refurb'd! Who's with me?! So many people are going to buy this an return it that it's gonna be refurb'd iPhone galore, although they'll still try to push that schlock for considerably more than the refurb--or the original, for that matter--is worth.
What can I say, I am a techno-whore.
------
BTW, I am totally getting the Meizu miniOne, too. Again, who's with me?!
Jon H. @ Jun 18th 2007 10:39PM
@derX.....
Aye man I'm wit cha man! I gotta have them both. I am a tech-a-holic. The first step is admitting my addiction but there is no patch for this thing man and no gum that's gonna curb this thing. The iphone wil merely take the edge off..... for a while. Then when the Meizu drops..... I'll have that too! I gotta get to those meetings man.......
jetta_girl001 @ Jun 18th 2007 10:42PM
Wow, I want that phone
bossman @ Jun 25th 2007 12:03PM
I love how some of yall reach faliy deep in ur asshole to come up with reasons to dis the iPhone. First GPS the N95 compared with Google Maps turn by turn directions is a wash in real world use unless u dont know how to read street signs. 3G on the N95 is useless unless u plan on goin to Europe to use it. and while i actually love the 5MP camera on the N95 id rather go buy a better ultraportable camera with my money. not to mention the fact that the N95 has no Querty input which is the reason i dont have 1.
